The number
An automatic pool cover — the kind that rolls out from a hidden track at the click of a button — runs $15,000–$25,000 installed for most rectangular pools. Curved or freeform pools cost more because of custom track work.
Why it's worth it
Chemical spend drops 50%+ (less UV degradation, less evaporation). Heat retention improves 40%+ (the cover is an insulating layer). Debris stays out — most customers skip skimming entirely. Kids and pets can't fall in. Insurance rates often drop.
Downsides
Cost. Occasional motor or fabric replacement (fabric lasts 8–12 years, motor 15–20). Adds mechanical complexity to the deck. Not all pool shapes work — kidney and heavily-curved freeform designs need a custom track.
